Format of vehicleId in GTFS-RT Regional

What is the format of vehicleId used in the GTFS-RT Regional? I tried searching, however, I did not find any information. So far, I figured out that for buses the last 4 digits are the fleet number but the other digits are a mystery.

  • The standards for GTFS doen't dictate so it varies:

"Internal system identification of the vehicle. Should be unique per vehicle, and is used for tracking the vehicle as it proceeds through the system. This id should not be made visible to the end-user; for that purpose use the label field"

Often in Sweden for buses it works with the last four digits, but there are expections where bus inventory numbers even differ there (like Östgötatrafiken).

  • I know the GTFS specs very well. The format of the vehicleId field is strictly Trafiklab's choice and has no connection whatsoever with the GTFS documentation. The fact they don't use the label field is their own matter. That is why I asked about the format Trafiklab uses in the first place...

  • The vehicle id used in the GTFS Realtime feeds is a unique numeric identifier, with no specific meaning. When using SIRI/NeTEx, the vehicle identifier can (depending on the datasource) be looked up in the static NeTEx data, where some information on the make, modell and capacity of the vehicle may be available.

The number is determined by the public transport authority providing the data and matches their systems.

In general, id fields are merely ids, and should not be parsed or interpreted.
